Castilla, A. M., Van Damme, R. & Bauwens, D.: Field body temperatures, mechanisms of thermoregulation and evolution of thermal characteristics in lacertid lizards. Nat. Croat., Vol. 8, No. 3., 253–274, 1999, Zagreb. We discuss three aspects of the thermal biology of lacertid lizards. First, we provide an overview of the available data on field body temperatures (Tb), the thermal sensitivity of various performance functions and selected body temperatures in different species of lacertid lizards. We also briefly summarise information on the mechanisms of thermoregulation. Second, we discuss recent developments to estimate the »precision« of thermoregulation, and the contribution of distinct behavioural mechanisms. Finally, we revise available evidence for the existence of evolutionary adjustments of thermal characteristics in lacertid lizards. Existing studies have mainly dealt with withinand among-species differences in thermoregulatory behaviour (selected temperatures) and thermal physiology of adults (optimal temperatures, heating rates). Available data provide only limited evidence for clear-cut evolutionary shifts in thermal physiology characteristics along climatic gradients.

Correlated evolution of thermal characteristics and foraging strategy in lacertid lizards

1. We investigated the association between field body temperatures (Tb), field air temperatures (Ta), and their differences (D) with measurements of foraging activity (percentage of time moving (PTM), number of movements per minute (MPM) and proportion of prey attacked while moving (PAM)) for 25 species of lacertid lizards. 2. Lizards active at relatively high field body temperatures tended to ...

The particularities of a remote islet shape the thermoregulatory profile of an endemic Mediterranean lizard.

Environmental temperatures considerably affect the reptilian ability for thermoregulation and harsh climatic conditions may impose a highly effective body temperature regulation to lizards. Such demanding conditions are more common to extreme mainland habitats (e.g. deserts or mountains). To the contrary, islands have more benign climate conditions thanks to the thermal buffering effect of the ...

Evolution of Sprint Speed in Lacertid Lizards: Morphological, Physiological, and Behavioral Covariation.

Organismal performance abilities occupy a central position in phenotypic evolution; they are determined by suites of interacting lower-level traits (e.g., morphology and physiology) and they are a primary focus of natural selection. The mechanisms by which higher levels of organismal performance are achieved during evolution are therefore fundamentally important for understanding correlated evo...

Thermal physiology of Amazonian lizards (Reptilia: Squamata)

We summarize thermal-biology data of 69 species of Amazonian lizards, including mode of thermoregulation and field-active body temperatures (Tb). We also provide new data on preferred temperatures (Tpref), voluntary and thermal-tolerance ranges, and thermal-performance curves (TPC's) for 27 species from nine sites in the Brazilian Amazonia. We tested for phylogenetic signal and pairwise correla...

Evaluating temperature regulation by field-active ectotherms: the fallacy of the inappropriate question.

We describe a research protocol for evaluating temperature regulation from data on small field-active ectothermic animals, especially lizards. The protocol requires data on body temperatures (Tb) of field-active ectotherms, on available operative temperatures (Te, "null temperatures" for nonregulating animals), and on the thermoregulatory set-point range (preferred body temperatures, Tset). The...
